The Grade 5 curriculum lays a critical foundation in technology. The weekly 1.5-hour classes are based on developing a solid foundation about the prototyping process by developing skills in coding, wiring, design thinking and data management. In this grade, the curriculum is no longer spiral. Instead, it is developmental with one topic thoroughly explored and consolidated before moving onto the next topic. The topics include Ohm’s Law, circuit diagrams with breadboards, storyboarding, persona building, coding and wiring an Arduino (with multiple different inputs and outputs) and data management in Excel. In addition, drills, cooperative group work, and problem solving continue to be key components in the Grade 5 curriculum. Unlike previous grades, Grade 5 students are expected to write their own class notes and are more accountable for their independent learning. All grade 5 students have tests, coding assignments and written final examinations.
